| Home | We have lived on an acre of land in the lower Fraser Valley of British Columbia, Canada since 1982. Then there was tall grass, slugs, grasshoppers, and 3 finches flying through (we now have hundreds of birds living in and visiting our garden). We have been gardening here organically since 1982. We started planting 17 fruit trees and made a few perennial beds the first year. We built the gazebo as the only shade on the entire acre until our trees grew. The only plan I had was 1/4 of the acre for the vegetable garden, another 1/4 for fruit trees and bush fruits. When we built a sunroom onto the house with two more doors out into the yard, we built a patio, arbour, and more perennial beds to be seen from the sunroom. The rambling rose/clematis arbour down the east side of the house came about as I needed more trellises for climbing roses and vines. An overall plan would have been more foolproof but I think the garden worked out well anyway. There is a sketch of our acre in the Garden Layout section. |
