For vegetables, raised beds are easy to dig, warm up sooner in the spring and are well drained - (leeks below). We overwinter leeks in the garden and sometimes have to chisel them out of the frozen ground but they are still delicious to about April of the next year. In the fall we plant fall rye and dig it in, in early spring.
For herbs - below is a new Echinacea purpurea and angustifolia bed
This is a bed of different basils - lettuce leaf, cinnamon, lemon, licorice, Siam Queen, and Osmin basils.
